What is Cloud Computing? The cloud or cloud computing has become a buzz phrase lately. “The Cloud” is a metaphor for the Internet. Cloud Computing means that hardware and software resources or services are made available on the Internet, managed by a third-party, and delivered to an organization or user. The short definition is applications or services are accessed via the web instead of your local computer or hard drive. If you’re getting on the internet, it’s very likely that you’re using cloud computing. Examples of cloud computing include: • Online backup software and cloud storage –such as Google Drive or Carbonite Online Backup that allow you to access your data from anywhere you have an Internet connection vs. backing up locally to your own hardware or computer. • Email on the go/webmail - instead of downloading locally to your computer through an email client. • Hosting services - like Flickr or Picasa that let you share photographs on the web.
