What is Constitution? What is Federalism? The basic idea behind a constitution is that it gives its citizens some inviolable rights- xuquuqo aan cidna ku xadgudbi Karin. For instance, the citizen’s rights to a basic education, to peace and security, to free speech, to assemble and even protest peacefully without fear of punishment among other things. Constitutions also restrict power hungry and violent leaders by keeping them at a check. For example a president under a constitutional governing system can’t make laws that might infringe on the rights of the citizen. On the other hand, Federalism is a process where one or more governments share power over the same area or country according to a constitution which lays down the powers of each government. The idea of federalism is Simple-it gives voice to the people. A more important aspect of Federalism is that politics and economics are interwoven. That is to say constituent voters demand from their representatives to solve their economic problems and create opportunities for them in their respective geographic areas. To put in a clearer picture, Federalism favors a philosophy which says let us build a country wide economy instead of an economy that is concentrated around two or three mega cities. Under this system of governing, if your politician sucks, all you have to do is wait for his term to end and replace him with another one that can do the job. It can work for Somalis really. Let us try it. It worked for many countries, and it sure can work for us.
