What is Worship? Ive heard many answers to this question. Ive heard people say - Lets have some worship, and then they have proceeded to find a guitar and sing some praise songs. Perhaps the most recent beginning of atheist churches might give a new twist on the word worship, as they gather and sing and hear inspirational messages. A modern term for churches are worshiping communities, which is a new but not wrong way to describe a church... But we are all worshipers of something or someone. If we worship God - the true God - how do we do that? Let me give an illustration. If I want to honor my wife on her birthday I dont buy her an ATV. Why, because she doesnt want one, hasnt asked for one, and probably would rarely ride one. I have to know her and know what she wants in order to most effectively show my love to her. This may seem overly simple - but I think it gets at the heart of worship. In order to worship God, we dont come and give to Him things he doesnt want - we come and worship Him based on our knowledge of who He is, and upon what we know He desires us to do. Somewhere in all the discussion of style, preference, and order, we have to get to first principles - Who is God - and How does He want us to worship Him. So invite a friend to join us as we begin this new series this Sunday, as we will open up Gods word from Psalm 96 - and begin to see how our God calls us to worship Him - In Spirit and in Truth.
