It is all very well saying that Maxwells equations prove light is an electromagnetic wave. What is an electromagnetic wave? If scientists and philosophers of the past felt the need to posit the existence of the aether in order to explain light waves, why should we blithely accept that electromagnetic waves can flow through a vacuum? If a wave is a disturbance in something, is it sensible to say this criteria no longer applies with electric and magnetic fields?
