What is in Your Hand? “The Lord said unto him, What is that - TopicsExpress

What is in Your Hand? “The Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.” (Exodus 4:2) WHEN God called Moses to deliver Israel from Egypt, Moses was most reluctant. He gave many excuses why he should not be the deliverer. God met some of the excuses with the question of our text, “What is in your hand?” Here we have an appeal, an appraisal, and an admonition. Appeal. When God asks you about something you have, it is often an appeal from God to use it in His service. If God is going to further His work through Moses, He must have what is in Moses’ hand to do it. If we are going to do anything for God, we must be willing to give to God what is in our hand. Submission is vital if we are going to serve God. Appraisal. Moses’ answer was simply “a rod.” This was Moses’ shepherd crook or staff. It was nothing special to look at, and Moses’ blunt answer indicates he did not see anything special in it either. But when that rod was yielded to God, it was given the significant name of “the rod of God” (Exodus 4:20; 17:9) and was used by God in some very prominent ways. It became part of a miracle in which it turned into a snake. It was used in the plagues (Exodus 9:23; 10:13) and to open the Red Sea (Exodus 14:16). It was used to bring water from a rock (Exodus 17:5, 6) and to give victory over the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8–13). We may appraise what is in our hands as of little value, but given to God it can accomplish much. Likewise, your opportunities may seem small, but use them fully for God, and you will see much done for God. The widow with two mites had very little in her hands, but given to God it has inspired multitudes to dedication. Admonition. “What is in thine hand?” can be asked in an admonitory way, too. Do you have something in your hand that you should not have? Do you have a magazine or book in your hand that is unholy? Do you have in your hand lottery tickets or a can or glass of some hellish drink? Do you have in your hand the hand of a man or woman whose hand you should not be holding? We need to empty our hands of all evil things which can defile us and dishonor God. John G. Butler
