What is our country coming to? Once a country proud of its history and heros has now resorted to many nationals who seem to want to forget it all.....especially our current government and the media!! The British celebrate their dead soldiers of WW1 WW2 with pride. Our country will soon celebrate the centenary of 1916 Rising and yet the promotional video (now scrapped) was more like a Board Fáilte tourism advert for Ireland with 10 secs of showing the heros of 1916!! A disgrace! Is it because it would promote what Sinn Fein stand for! And other parties are afraid that reminding us of our history will make us more Republican and could influence more votes for Sinn Fein? Our history is our history and it should be told and protrayed in true facts never mind modern political tactics!! Today John Delaney FAI is slated for singing Joe McDonnell in a pub!! A song about his history- another Irish Hero who died because of his fight for a better life for His people and for freedom! Another important part of irish history. And reporters saying to sing this song is reversing every thing that the peacetalks in the north stand for!!!! Come on!! ....Shame on you!! We allow orange walks....they celebrate their history on the streets of Ireland and now we cant sing a song about our history and a hero?? To be forgotten is to die twice! We must, however, never set aside or forget those who died, were bereaved, or injured, during a tragic conflict. As the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur wrote, to be forgotten is to die twice. We owe a duty to all those who lost their lives, the duty to build together in peace; it is the only restitution, the only enduring justice we can offer them:- Micheal D Higgins
