What is the nature of the real and the ideal in politics? One important perspective on this question, which tends to be neglected in contemporary political discourse, is the role of one’s historical tradition in informing ethical and political decision-making. For, the degree to which the latter involves a genuine knowledge, understanding, and familiarity with one’s past – i.e. a sense of who we are and where we come from – would appear to provide a useful way to distinguish realism from idealism. It is of utmost importance that we are able to decipher sober judgment from mere fantasy, soundness and prudence from the chimeric and utopian. Examining the life of the past in the present will be imperative for this needed inquiry.
