What is the purpose of Education? Earning or Problem Solving "Prayer: Beloved God, Gurudev, Saints and Sages of all Religion, purify my thoughts. " Dear Colleagues/ Friends, What is the purpose of education? Earning or solving real life problem. I have been in IT industry for 15 years and as I look back I think for some time I have mistakenly given value to education only if it’s helped earning (read getting fat salary). I think most who come out of engineering education think in this way. This thought process is probably induced by society too which in general feels good education means fat salary. I feel it’s wrong to view good education only as a tool to have good income. Many people are using their knowledge not only to make a living but also to solve people problem thus making very valuable contribution. If I have to guide new engineering pass outs joining industry then I would say please do not make same mistake as most of your seniors like me probably have made. I agree for many of us who come from middle class family monthly earning is very important. But if our entire focus is therein earning and we don’t look at life’s other issue then we cannot say that we have good education. Too much focus on earning takes away focus from right spending and being aware what our real need is in long term. Increase in salary increases our need and most often we see our income is not able to match our (unnecessary) needs. This increase stress / tension in our life/relationship at home/office resulting in various lifestyle diseases and most of us spend our hard earned money in hospitals. At work place, we compete trying to give more output, many times just for a good performance appraisal and better raise. Almost no focus is there for long term welfare / work culture. People who succeed in highly cutthroat environment get rewarded materially and given promotion and they continue to build that culture. They are happy when they are promoted but seldom have they known they are taking more headaches and carrying forward task of creation of a stressful environment. Many of them are surprised to see people leaving them while they honestly trying to focus on performance (in terms of monetary output). There are many who move out of industry after 10-15 years as they find living in this kind of environment is tough. Industry thus loses some good experienced people which could have continued if work environment was not so stressful. Not to say that everything is bad in IT industry. The hard working culture has good side. In these environment people are busy doing creative work and it’s relatively free from corruption seen in many other work. My concern is valuing self and others in terms of monetary compensation they get. In my opinion it indicates lack of real education. Many people who earn high are so proud / arrogant that they are not able respect others and lose people support at office / home. Many people live happily even with lesser income. For me, this is real use of education. Some go beyond and serve society with their education. I have highest respect for them. A lot of valuable work is done by women folks who stay at home to manage home with no monetary compensation. Parents bringing up their kids do it without compensation is another big contribution to society as today’s children will take charge tomorrow and we need to take care of them and give them good education. I don’t know I have any credentials to guide others. All above thoughts are mine and I hope above thoughts will guide in making right decision for self. To end I think it’s important to remind ourselves. • That we use education to identify real problem and solve them rather solve one problem of making money. • Use our education for everything that we do and not just see it as a skill at office. • Build courage, patience, good health and not just material wealth. Help others in achieving same. • Be thankful to other people contribution to our lives. • We may come across people with narrow mindset who can misuse our good intention. We need to protect ourselves from such negative elements. We should be ready to help people if they are really need help and making effort to improve. As I write this I thank my friends / colleagues / family for being there to support me in spite of all my imperfections. Do not doubt the good work you are doing.
