What made Bushs surge effective was the Sunni Awakening, when tribal leaders were paid off to out and help terminate anti-occupation forces. But now the bulk of the Sunni population is running to join Islamic State. Al-Sadr and other Shiite leaders were threatening rebellion during the Status of Forces Agreement talks in 2007-8, in which Bushs proposal to place permanent American bases there was dropped because of it. I would argue that it was the Shiites who ultimately made the pullout happen. So now, we have a situation where folks like Wally and Frank watch dumb asses on Fox talking about the necessity of an American presence in Iraq and believe in the effectiveness of it. What this shows is that, if this were to be so, thered be a bloodbath like none ever seen before. The regiobn would be destabilized more than it was before.
