What many view as DOJ extortion continues with Toyota as its latest victim. Others may consider it a corporate payoff to avoid prosecution. On Wednesday, the US Government’s top prosecutor Eric Holder announced that the car maker will pay a record $1.2 billion dollars and submit to scrutiny by an “independent” monitor who will review Toyota’s safety reporting practices. The announcement is the culmination of a years-long criminal investigation into the cover-up of problems related to uncommanded acceleration in certain models of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Rather than pursue criminal charges against those responsible for misleading the public about the problems with these cars, the Department of Justice is once again happy to extract a billion dollars from the company and call it even, provided Toyota keeps their nose clean for the next three years.
