What nations have the most generous people? Q. Overall generosity: Are the Chinese more generous than the Irish? A. China was #147, and Ireland #3 (after Australia and New Zealand) in the World Giving Index 2010. Q. Giving to charities: In which country do people give most to charity? A. Malta was #1 (83% of the population); runners up Netherlands 77%, United Kingdom 73%, and Thailand 73% - the Buddhist Tambun is Big! Q. Helping strangers, and volunteering: Where are you most likely to be helped by a stranger or volunteer your time? A. Liberia was #1 at helping strangers; runners up Sierra Leone, Sudan, and Canada. Turkmenistan was #1 at volunteering; runners up Sri Lanka, and Central African Republic, Sierra Leone. Conclusion: While wealthy nations tended to score most highly overall, some less wealthy nations excelled in non-monetary generosity. The USAs reputation for generosity was downgraded by people feeling impoverished by the Global Financial Crisis. In 2010, only 60% of people gave money, putting the US 18th on the list, well below the UK (73%) and Australia (70%) and less, even, than Lao PDR (63%)!
