What public shelters are like in Romania. A very accurate - TopicsExpress

What public shelters are like in Romania. A very accurate description. This is the reality of countless thousands of dogs all over Romania at this very minute. And of countless millions more that have come and gone during the years; literally born to suffer short painful lives so not worth living. So when I see rescue groups that freak out and focus on rescuing 1,2,3 or so shelter animals....... without actually doing ANYTHING to prevent more dogs from being born to end up taking the place of those rescued dogs... I say, whats the point? Yes, 1 or 2 or 3 lives saved, but those places are going to be taken by new dogs condemned now to the shelter life because the places are now available... 3 dogs saved, 3 more now condemned to horrible shelter life... How is this a winning scenario? Not to mention that maybe 1 or 2 dogs out of 100 will actually be adopted... How is this fair to the rest of them? Adoption will never solve the problem- civilized countries can not absorb that fast the homeless animals that Romania produces on an ongoing basis. With no real education and mass sterilization campaigns here, rescuing one shelter dog will in effect do nothing for the homeless animal population. Just an extremely lucky case in a sea of sadness. Sterilize them all, educate people to care properly about their animals and have them sterilized (for free!), and only then adoption comes next; the smaller resulting number of animals will be more manageable- and a larger percentage could actually be rescued and get to live a happy life. I have reached that point when an organization has my respect only if it focuses on prevention of suffering. I have seen enough suffering to know that sterilizations hand in hand with education are the only way to go. Only rational, balanced, successful way for the stray dogs cause.
