What seems more concerning than the number of new jobs being added recently is the trend of the labor force participation rate. In 2000, we had a labor force participation rate of 67% and today we have a participation rate of 63%. The future productivity of the country comes into question when the number of people working or looking for work drops as a percentage, while the possible working population grows.
