What some people say is “treat the patient, not the monitor.” What they really mean is “I don’t know how to accurately interpret the monitor, so I can just ignore what is on the monitor.” Sometimes we treat what the monitor says. They may not have a pulse, so you have to know what is on the monitor. Treating asystole, PEA, VF, and VT are different. They may be having chest pain, but what is on the monitor is what you base your treatment on- to go to the cath lab or not. They may have a slow pulse. Do you give atropine, pace them, or just provide a diesel bolus? It all depends what is on the monitor See? You do treat the monitor sometimes.
