What to look for in a soft lure? 1. Forget about price for a minute. The amount of times I hear ‘Well you can get loads on ebay for a couple of quid’. Yes you’ll catch the odd fish but when it matters you’ll be left with an empty box of fish while everyone else is filling up. 2. Do some research!! There’s plenty of info in the tackle shops, magazines and online about new lures/old lures/trends. 3. Plastic. Get them in your hand to see how supple the plastic is. Stiff lures will not swim properly through the water. (These are usually the cheaper ones). 4. Hooks. Check the hook size is right for your target species. There’s no point finding a nice lure with a tiny hook that will fail on you when you get that fish of a lifetime on. 5. Colour. Probably in my opinion the least important part of the lure. Action over colour every time. Yes there are times when everyone is catching on 1 colour but I’m always confident in my lures that no matter what colour it is, I can continue to catch because I know exactly how they are working in the water. 6. Price. Ok so the better lures do cost a fraction more money. That’s just the way it is. But if you’ve spent a lot of money to come fishing in the first place on fuel, accommodation, boat costs, food, beer etc. Then why scrimp on the most important part of your terminal gear. The lure is what’s going to catch you the fish. £6 on 3 lures that will catch you a box of fish is better than £6 on 6 lures that will only catch you a few.
