What type of legacy are you leaving? The Word for Today A Man’s Legacy Read Isaiah 14:1 through 18:7 “Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble?” (Isaiah 14:16). Belshazzar, the son of King Nabonidus, was an arrogant leader. The Book of Daniel discusses his life in more detail as it reveals the true character of Belshazzar. Before the night of a decisive battle, Belshazzar hosted a grand feast rather than prepare his soldiers for battle. During the feast, Belshazzar gave orders to bring out the goblets taken from the temple in Jerusalem. He and his guests dined with these holy vessels as they celebrated their pagan gods. Belshazzar showed his arrogance and disdain for godly things by defiling the vessels used to atone for the sins of God’s people. With the exception of Scripture, the name Belshazzar was wiped from history until 1881 with the discovery of the Nabonidus Cylinder at the Temple of Shamash. It revealed that King Nabonidus had a son named Belshazzar, who served as co-regent with his father. Belshazzar could have been remembered for his kindness or faith, but instead he is remembered as a man who would not humble himself before God. Thought for Today: How will you be remembered?
