Whatever You Do And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. Colossians 3:23 Recommended Reading 1 Corinthians 10:14-32 One of the thorniest issues to arise in the first-century Christian Church came from that hotbed of controversies, Corinth. Because Corinth was a seat of pagan worship and idolatry, much of the meat that found its way into the local markets was meat that was left over from pagan sacrificial and worship rituals. And the question arose: Should Christians eat meat that had been sacrificed to idols? Long story short (1 Corinthians 10:14-32), Paul said not to participate in pagan feasts; but once the meat is removed from the pagan temple and sold in the market, it has lost its religious taint and is fine to eat. But more importantly, he said that each Christian’s conscience was the final arbiter and no one should criticize another for his or her decision. Some may choose to eat, others may choose not to. Then Paul said the most important thing: “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (verse 31, italics added). Everything in life is to be done with a view toward pleasing God. Whatever you have planned to do today, consider how it might be done heartily for the Lord in a way that glorifies Him. The end of our election is that we might show forth the glory of God in every way. John Calvin
