Whats in a name? In Nigeria we value names & will even name our selves after every event, thing & places. Intresting names abound here too. Up North, you get hear names like Ahmed, Shehu, Abubakar, Yusuf, Ibrahim, Shettima, etc. Some even add the name of their villages to their names & some call people by the ailment they suffer from. Like my good friend Abu gurgu-a brilliant mechanic. Some name themselves after their trade-Salisu mai kayan mia. Some bear religious names too. In the East, Uche, Emeke, Chukwude (I know Chukwu means God), Ifeanyi, Amaka, Anyi, etc. I believe some are named after market days too-like Eji-Ofor. In the West, Olagunju, Olusegun, Akinwande, Adebanjo, Ogunsanwo, Osaniyi, Osungbade, Omotosho, etc are common. Some bear names after gods, some for the circumstance surrounding their births-Ige, Ojo, Ajayi, etc. South, you hear names like Akpan, Oru, Osarentin, Agbon, Aikonbare, Sagbe, Clark, Spiff-although borrowed. Some cross names too because of the thin line between their state & states boundaring them. Question: Yorubas will say, oruko loun gbe ni! Your name exhalts you. Do we believe that Ogunsanwo for instance must behave like who believes in Ogun? What really exhalts-name or deeds? What exactly is in a name? Your contribution(s) with explaination will be appreciated. Thank you.
