Whats on my mind Facebook asks... To be honest, tomorrows Gospel, the parable of the Weeds and Wheat (The Wheat and Tares) and something that has just happened to a dear sweet and struggling child. A close examination of this parable reveals a truth that we are not so keen to speak about – that which should not be named – hypocrisy. Those who dress up to look like good and caring people, but are not. Those that espouse values to the world that they do not practice are impersonators of good. Those that produce a fruit for show, the chosen, the ones that like to be in while others are out, are impostors. While working on my Masters in Environmental Science at Morehead State, Dr. Burns told our environmental science class about his trip to what was then the Soviet Union. At dinner they were served the most wonderful bread and when their hosts were complimented, Dr. Burns overheard one of them say, but good wheat makes for wonderful bread anywhere. Wheat is good for the world, it nourishes and replenishes it… weeds though are those who say they care and do nothing, not even for the least of these - children who struggle with divorced parents, death of family and friends, social pressures and the like. The idea of who belongs and who does not, who stays and who goes, is the question dealt with in the parable of the Wheat and the Tears. Lord have mercy on those who shove others out... more tomorrow, 8:30 and 11 at St. Raphaels - a place where you are welcome regardless.
