Whats up for grabs today..... Mick Ryan Memorial Trophy On February 7th this year Mick Ryan passed away peacefully in the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin after a short illness, bravely borne. A deep loss has been felt in his home, community and in the county. Mick was born in Clonmore, Templemore on the 5th May 1939 and moved to Fennor with his family as a young boy. One of ten siblings he stayed on the farm and cared for his parents. As a young man he became involved in many projects which he deemed necessary for the common good of the community. When the South Eastern Health Board was considering closing down the old doctors clinic in Gortnahoe he was one of the five trustees who fundraised to build a new clinic. In 1987, the clinic which is still in use today was created. While PRO of the Gortnahoe Community Association, Mick was chosen as a candidate in the Lord Mayor Campaign to raise funds to build a Community Centre. He won, and was proud to welcome President Mary Robinson to the opening ceremony in 1992. However, it was his work with the Fennor Group water scheme which gave him greatest satisfaction. From its inception in 1981 till his death, Mick was secretary and caretaker and It was his pride and joy. He was on call 24/7 to fix a leak, meet Council Engineers, Health Board officials or do whatever had to be done to keep water flowing. Mick also had a keen interest in history, politics, current affairs and all things Irish, especially the music. He loved a game of cards, horse racing and hurling. He was a devoted Tipperary fan and the banter with his friends across the border in Urlingford at match time was legendary as were the bonfires, flags and famous “champagne reception” to welcome home the Tipp hero’s in 1989 on Fennor Hill. Mick certainly loved life and always had a joke or a laugh for anyone he met. He would have been very hard to ground if he was aware that today’s trophy was named after him. Ni bheidh a leithead ann aris Todays event would not be possible but for the massive community spirit shown by all.
