What’s up with the debate over the rainbow crosswalks? Why is there even one? Ive posted a lot about this topic on various discussion boards, including in SpeakUpAustin.Org - Here’s a synopsis of my two cents. The rainbow crosswalks are meant to represent culture and diversity in Austin’s “gayborhood” – It’s another fun and artistic way of Keeping Austin Weird! If you cross I-35, on East 11th St you can find “Rhapsody” – Colorful and artistic murals of blacks playing music in an area of the city where jazz was a mecca – That specific part of the city was safe-haven for blacks to congregate and play music during and prior to the civil rights era. We should be able to have cultural murals and public art all over the city! I see any opposition to this as blatant discrimination.... Austin is a city of artists and boasts diversity. Everyone is unique! The main problem is when some irrelevant characteristic is used to exclude someone from power and used to marginalize them. This needs to stop... Let’s start now- Yes to the rainbow crosswalks, yes to expressing diversity and culture, yes to art, and yes to Keeping Austin Weird! I’ll be at city hall tonight at 5:30 for the final public hearing on this topic and I encourage you all to attend!! #serafia
