When Bad Times Roll God is our refuge and strength, always - TopicsExpress

When Bad Times Roll God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. PSALM 46:1-2 NLT On December 26, 2004, the world was shocked to hear that a 9.3 earthquake in the ocean off southeast Asia had caused a mighty tsunami to crash ashore in several countries and destroy entire towns, with the death toll at well over 200,000. People cried out, Where are You, God? How could You let this happen? We always ask this why question at such times. Why would a loving God permit such death, particularly when the toll included many children? The sad fact is, we live in a fallen world, and events happen according to the laws of nature. Because of the sin of mankind, there will always be things that happen other than what we would want -- a perfect world. There will be troubles and suffering beyond our control. At such times, our comfort must come from Gods Word. In todays verse we find three comforts in such events of life: God is our refuge. God is our strength. God is always ready to help in times of trouble. If we can internalize these big three promises we can live with this victory: We will not live in fear. What great assurance when our soul quakes. We can apply these promises to all events of life -- tsunamis, earthquakes, heartbreaks, or soul quakes. Just remember, when we walk through lifes storms we have two alternatives: Respond as a faith-filled person. Respond as a faithless person. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers (Psalm 1:1-3 NASB). A faith-filled person will respond in these ways: He delights in reading and knowing Gods Word. He meditates on Gods law day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water. He yields fruit in its season. His leaves will not wither. He will prosper in all things. This man of faith understands where he came from and where he is going. He is not one who questions God because of the events of the world. He doesnt look to the world for the answers of life. He is firmly grounded in what God assures him, even when the quakes of life occur. Prayer: Father God, let me stand on Your promises when the quakes of life come my way, as they surely will. Give me the faith to trust Your Word. Amen. Action: Begin today to trust God and all of His promises for you and your family. Reread Psalm 1:2-3.
