When Christians stop to ask what the Christian position on a certain social problem should be, a lot of them think that the question is what laws should the state enact to solve this problem. I do not believe that is what Christians should do. They should think instead what we can do as the church to reach out to the people, our neighbors, who are struggling with this problem? How can we love them? How can we help them? I am not saying that Christians should have no role in the society at large--quite the opposite. I am saying that WE should help solve those problems and not slough it off on the state to do it for us. I am also not meaning to scold Christians in general. Some of my fellow Christians have opened free clinics, served at soup kitchens, passed out blankets to street dwellers, hosted girls with "unplanned" pregnancies, started support groups for addicts, and many other helpful things. Sometimes, in fact, our non-Christian neighbors overlook the good that Christians have done in the world. However, there are Christians who, as I said, automatically go to the default mode of looking to the state to solve problems that Jesus told us we were to be involved with ourselves. "There oughta be a law" should not be the FIRST response of a Christian to a problem affecting our communities or our nation.
