When Emiliano Zapata was 16, both of his parents passed away and he was left to care for his siblings. They were a peasant family, and because of this Zapata had much insight into the many problems that plagued the working class at that time. Sugar cane was a main export of Morelos, and the plantation owners would buy up massive amounts of land with no regard for the villages and people that lived there at the time. Those villagers were then forced into debt slavery, working on the land that was once theirs to own.
