When I arrived in Virginia Thursday night, I found that my Dad was in as bad a shape as I had been warned to expect. He was barely able to move and was quite obviously experiencing a great deal of pain. He was not able to stand but we did get him into an upright position sitting on the couch in his office so that I could change him into his pajamas. It was difficult to get his pants pulled up as he was too weak and in too much pain to raise his hips. After I finally was able to get his pants on, my Mom removed his sweater and, at that point, my Dad, who seemed barely able to hold his head up and his eyes were half open, said in a raspy whisper, Keith, before you unbutton my shirt sleeve, you need to know that the radiation has caused a problem with my left hand. Two weeks ago, I couldnt even lift my left hand but, since radiation, I have this problem where quite often my hand simply starts to...whoa!...whoa!...there it goes! Suddenly, his left hand began to rise slowly. His hand was quivering slightly as it rose slowly higher and higher. When his left hand was about a foot above his head, everyone in the room was completely frozen and trying to figure out what was taking place. Suddenly, my Dad opened his eyes wide, looked up at his left hand above his head and quickly shot his right hand up, grabbed his left hand, and slowly lowered it to his lap. He then said, There! Do you see what I mean? Sometimes my left hand just floats away! Yes, he is very sick but thank God he still has that incredible sense of humor!!!! His little stunt immediately lit up the whole room and we all approached the next few days with new hope and vigor because, even though we were there to comfort him and inspire him, he found a humorous way to inspire us and give us comfort.
