I therefore clarify that ghoonghat is as much a feudal, backward custom as burqa, and so should be done away with. I am against all backward, feudal customs, whether of Hindus or Muslims. Thus, I have often criticized the caste system, and called it a curse on the nation. In my opinion all backward customs and practices should be criticized, as the poets Kabir and Ghalib did, and we should make no distinction between Hindu and Muslim in this connection. Our national aim must be to make India a modern, powerful, industrial state, which alone will enable us to abolish poverty, unemployment, lack of healthcare, good education, etc and raise the standard of living of the people
