When I first came back to Malaysia some 12 years ago (after living more than 20 yrs abroad), I was going through some hard time adapting to my own homeland. I still remember the electricity supply was OFTEN disrupted without any good justification, so was water supply. It was in Cheras -Kuala Lumpur, not some god-forsaken village. I remembered crying alone hopelessly with a toddler and a baby - both of them hungry and dirty, as the house was without electricity and water supply (albeit for a few days). I thought hard about what civilization was supposed to mean and if clean water should be a basic human right. I certainly felt trapped in a city that appeared to be prosperous but its utilities service was found wanting. Not to mention having my car stolen, house broken into and bags snatched for many times. No peace of mind nor basic comfort - not for me. Fortunately, things had improved somewhat but there remains lots of room for improvement. Developed nation by 2020? Way to go...... we are not yet there.
