When I heard there are over 100 species of Colorado grasshopper, I - TopicsExpress

When I heard there are over 100 species of Colorado grasshopper, I decided I should start looking at them. The first image is of the most common species at Bluestem Prairie Open Space (Big Johnson Reservoir) near Widefield, El Paso County today, Saturday. Not sure if I identified them correctly, but there was some type of mating or territorial activity going on. The pair started about 2 feet apart and then purposely ended up very close and side-by-side. One would lower its leg and then raise it as if it was showing off the orange coloration. Then, the 2nd one would do the same thing followed by the 1st repeating the behavior and on and on. The 2nd photo is a yellow-leg version of what looks to me to be fairly similar but this one was in the wide sand floodplain along Fountain Creek at Fountain Creek Regional Park in El Paso County. Both from 4 October. My guess after looking at Bug Eric is Mottled Sand Grasshopper (Spharagemon collare).
