When I lived in South East Somerset, the younger inhabitants of the next town were deadly enemies of the local youth, as had been their parents. Daring bands of older boys would go to bars in the other town, get drunk, chat-up birds, and have a fight. Sometimes this resulted in a wedding, which usually served to increase the enmity. At that time, tribal warfare was still the norm in most parts of West Papua, and probably still is among the estimated 44 uncontacted tribal groups. It is wonderful to see how the Melanesia Spearhead Group is pulling ancient enemies together. Melanesia Spearhead Group: Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and the FLNKS of New Caledonia got together as a political gathering in 1983, and formalized this agreement for trade and economic development on 23 March 2007.
