When I was pregnant with my daughter I found a soulful writer - TopicsExpress

When I was pregnant with my daughter I found a soulful writer named Catherine Newman over at a baby website. She was blogging about her life with her toddler and her pregnancy which mirrored the timing of my own pregnancy. Shes long since moved on from the baby site and now has her own blog called benandbirdy.blogspot where she continues to write about all sorts of funny tearful honest things. In the past handful of years, shes been sharing recipes too. I never actively followed her blog ... meaning I never hit that pesky like button or gave away my email address. At the time it was too scary to me to be visible or to subscribe to anything. But I followed her weekly nonetheless. Im telling you about her because I find myself thinking about words she wrote many years ago. Words that have stayed with me. Words I reach for when Im trying really hard to master this juggling, balancing, mindfully-parenting, whole-authentic-living thing. Im not going to get it exactly right, so forgive me. But Ill do my best: Our goal as a parent is to raise our children to be people we like. I know she was more eloquent than that. But thats pretty much what it boils down to. ;) Isnt that brilliant? Raise people you would like to be around. People you would like to be friends with if you met them in the world. Simple. Perfect. No confusion. No lack of clarity. No messiness or second guessing. It just makes sense. Im going to add to it -- If we want to raise our children to be people we like, well then, we better start first with ourselves. You have to model loving yourself for it to be infectious. Love yourself and raise your children to be people you would like in the world. It all starts with me. It all starts with you. Like yourself and if you dont well then get your butt over to a place where you do. Just be prepared to laugh a little and cry a little along the way. Thanks, Catherine!
