When I went to pick up the boys today from Mimis, on the table was an empty plastic container with a zebra butterfly in it that Andrew had caught all by himself. He was quite proud of his new pet. Mimi had put grass and flowers in it for the butterfly and I was informed we would bring it home. I told the boys we can put an orange in there for it to eat and drink and also told them they have to understand that butterflies dont live a long life, so we cant be upset if it not with us for very long. Both boys nodded in acceptance and we went home. I noticed that the ride was a bit quite (completely unusual for my children!) Granted Tyler had fallen asleep, but Andrew was quietly looking out the window. As soon as we got into the garage, Andrew jumped out of his seat and grabbed the butterfly container as he mentioned something about time to go home butterfly. I then realized that he was letting it go. We woke his brother and the both of them released the butterfly back into the wild. A few minutes later Andrew asked for a few minutes to talk to me in private (gotta love this kid), and we went into his bedroom to talk. He told me that when I said butterflies do not live long, he started thinking, and thought about it all the way home. He didnt want to see the butterfly die and thought it would be better if it could live free. I was blown away. He didnt want to just have something suffer in a small box the last moments of its life, it deserved better. I told him its very important that we respect Gods animals and how He created them to live, and sometimes, even though they are sweet and cute, some animals are best left in the wild as God intended them to be. I told him I was very proud of him and his decision to let it go and told him we could order some butterfly eggs to hatch and release like weve done before. I just love the young man I see growing before my eyes.
