When Jesus was asked to identify the greatest commandment he went - TopicsExpress

When Jesus was asked to identify the greatest commandment he went straight to the very core of the Jewish affirmation of faith: the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Hear O Israel, the LORD your God, the Lord is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. He then went farther to apply the first commandment to how love for God is lived out in this life by saying And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. He then affirmed: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Do we agree, or are we quick to put other commandments in the place of preeminence? Adherence to rules and regulations as established by Governments come to mind, as do paragraphs in the Books of Discipline. In the end, what really matters is what Jesus said and did ... what Jesus proclaimed, how he lived, and how he called us to follow him. Anything else is, at best, secondary. This is why Jesus, when he gave us his own commandment in John 15:12, said: This is my commandment, that you love one another. If we fail to love one another, we dont really love God. If we love God, we will love one another.
