When Jonas Salk, an American medical researcher, and virologist, born to Jewish parents, declined to patent his discovery of the Polio Vaccine, in 1957, his simple explanation for not wishing to profit from a discovery which has saved millions of lives, was in stark contrast to the greed of Big Pharma. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun? How can a society claim to be civilized when it puts profit before peoples lives?
