When Will A Banana Pop? Before popping its beautiful inflorescence, a banana produces a canopy of leaves, presumably to maximize solar energy collection and to provide protective shade for the soon to emerge fruit which will hang for 3-7 months before ripening. This photo perfectly illustrates a banana that is about to pop. Note the bulging crown and well deployed canopy. The last of my original plants, this one took 20 months to reach this point. Hoping the wait is worth it!
