When at a party or group social gathering at someones house, it is - TopicsExpress

When at a party or group social gathering at someones house, it is okay to sneak out and leave without saying goodbye to everyone. This is often considered rude, but Im going to argue that its actually polite. When youre leaving the party while it is still going and everyone is still having a good time, to go around to each and every person and interrupt their conversation to say youre leaving can kill the party mood and atmosphere. You turn several conversations, or the entire party for a few minutes, into being about you and your departure.I think the method to avoid this - sneaking out - which is often considered rude, is actually a valid social action. There are two exceptions:(1) You do need to say goodbye and thank you to the host.(2) If you came with people or if someone is at the party with the idea that theyre looking out for you, then you need to tell those people youre leaving as well. (Example: you, single, arrive with your other single girlfriend. You two always look out for each other when mingling at parties. Before leaving, you should let her know that youre heading out so she isnt worried about you when you disappear.)Other than those two exceptions, I think it is socially acceptable and even polite to sneak out of a party without doing a round of goodbyes to everyone there.
