When it opened three years ago, the hope was it could do for Margate what the Tate did for St Ives in Cornwall and the Guggenheim for Bilbao in Spain. Today the Turner Contemporary is widely seen as a hugely successful contemporary art gallery - although its not without its critics. The gallery cost more than 17 million pounds to build since opening, its estimated 1.2 million people have passed through its doors and the gallery claims its brought 30 million pounds to the local economy.
