When my kids were younger, I would have never consciously thought about how difficult and draining and all-consuming it was to raise children. Its a collection of inside jokes: lack of sleep, hectic schedules, no social life, money spent on clothes and braces and college. Its funny, except when its not. I wish we could all be honest about how difficult it is. Now that my children are older theres been a slow, gentle exhale of relief as they become more independent. I didnt anticipate it. I thought it would be painful. My older two can cook and clean for themselves and my oldest is starting college next year, and Im only now seeing my life as something other than mom. Im proud of them and theyll always be my babies, but looking back at those early years and considering the challenges of raising young children, I have to admit, Im glad were past that part of our lives. To be honest, I was never very good at it.
