When pacifists say, War never solves anything, a very common response is to cite the American Civil War as a counterexample. But this contention fails the minute you look at it from the perspective of the people whose lives were destroyed by the slave trade. What are those centuries of raiding, kidnapping, abuse, and cultural destruction if not acts of war? The Civil War was not a war to end slavery, but a particularly concentrated and violent paroxysm in a war against people of the African diaspora — a war which had already been going on for centuries, and which continues to this day.
