When the first “horseless carriage” arrived in #Kalamazoo in 1900, many considered the “new-fangled contraption” to be a toy of the rich. In June 1902, Maurice and Clarence Blood put the finishing touches on the first car built in the city at their bicycle shop on North Rose Street. They sold 150 Blood cars before Henry Ford sold his first Model A in 1903 and designed the 1903-04 Michigan that was sold cooperatively with the Fuller family. They subsequently left the company to build the Blood car and the Michigan was manufactured by the Fullers. Within three years a group of area businessmen, including the Fuller and Blood brothers, along with Dr. W.E. Upjohn, had formed the Michigan Automobile Company, Ltd. The Michigan was produced until 1906, when these businessmen went on to other endeavors. This example of a 1903 Michigan Runabout is on display at the Gilmore Car Museum in the special exhibit, “Kalamazoo: The Other Motor City.” #FridayFeature
