When the going gets tough, the tough get going! I love that - TopicsExpress

When the going gets tough, the tough get going! I love that line and have used It many times since I heard it as a young man. It is so relevant in all aspects of life and especially poker. I, like many others have had a rough summer at the Wsop this year. I have had a few deep runs and even bubbled the one drop satellite for $1m, basically for a total cash of $5777. ( think I have played 10 tournaments in total, which is not a real lot I know). But I also know that this is poker and sometimes no matter how excited you are, rested, prepared, whatever.....shit just not go your way and the cards do not co-operate. So back to my quote, for me when things are not going well, I prefer to tough it out and knuckle down and keep my variance as low as possible. Unlike some friends of mine who decide to bet bigger and bigger when they are losing, eventually going bust or distraught and usually both. Fortunately the cash games have given me some solace but again I decided not to kick things up too much. My strategy is to build confidence in any way I can. Taking a few days off, playing smaller stakes, reading a good article or even having a good old fashioned debate. You would be surprised how much booking a few small wins can do for your confidence. In November 04 I was on a huge downswing and had basically lost 90% of my bankroll playing 10/20 nlhe online. In 2005 Aussie millions I played so bad and was so tilted and running bad that I decided to punish myself. I promised myself I would only play 2/4 nlhe for the entire month of February. I won 32k that month booking 28 straight wins. By the time I had decided to go to Vegas that year I had booked 5 winning months and my bank roll was up to about 200k. By the time I arrive in Vegas my confidence was at an all time high because I had also won or chopped the last 4 monthly tournaments at crown. A few weeks later I won the main event. But there is no way I could have achieved that if I didnt have the discipline to keep my variance low and book small wins and rebuild. Today Im sitting by the pool with my family at the Bellagio getting my mind ready for the main event tomorrow, hope it all goes well for me but if it doesnt its ok I will just continue to do what I do best. Keep getting tougher. Its been a great summer in Vegas either way for me, have spent some time with beloved friends, eaten some amazing meals and had the pleasure of having my family by my side. Until next time Pass he Sugar JH
