When the time comes for someone to go forward and fix new sails to halyards, climb the mast, or act as the eyes at the front of the boat, it’s the bowman who does it. Generally the reserve of the young and ambitious, bowmen are a special breed. Typically, it is the role of the bowman that involves the most brawn, risk and injuries and, as such, it tends to be the start of the rite of passage to the afterguard.
