When there is a tension between economic growth and preservation of social and cultural values (amid increasing unemployment), commonsense of the modern man, as rightly named homo economicus, is to let go off the latter. Economic news which I just watched on BBC seem to reveal entirely different story. Bhutan is a small landlocked country (theyre not even million I think) in South Asia. They raise their major revenue from Tourism. Yet, they restricted the number of tourists into their country out of big concern for their rich Buddist tradition and social values. From what their prime minister was saying I got the impression that : what is the point of tourism if it is causing destruction of the values we cherish and value most. In fact for authorities with Bhuddist values and tradition, avoiding trade off between earning much needed hard currencies and destruction of their cherished values is not surprising.
