When were cutting high value logs during hot weather, they have a tendency to split, especially Ash. Ive got this neat little tool that inserts flitch savers into the end of the logs. Theyre plastic anchors that keep the split from getting worse. You drive them in just like you would a nail. They can stay in the log right through the sawmill as the plastic wont hurt the saw blades. I hear that Hickory is the worst but Ive seen Ash pop apart an hour after it was cut in hot humid weather and it reduces the value and options for how the mill can saw it. I provide you with these informational facts as one day, it may help you crush someone in a heated game of Trivial Pursuit (logger edition).
