Whenever I havent run for a while, or a friend points out Im - TopicsExpress

Whenever I havent run for a while, or a friend points out Im eating bad food, I often joke Its ok, im training for Everest. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you should get fit before climbing Everest or going to altitude. It has been found in a number of studies that fitter people do worse at altitude than less fit individuals. The graph shows that people with a greater VO2 max test (common indicator of CV-fitness) have a much greater reduction in their VO2 max at altitude than unfit people. Fitter individuals are also more likely to be unwell. In fact, a famous English rock climber, mountaineer and smoker called Don Whillans once said in response to being asked how he prepares for Everest: Every night on the way home from the pub, I get a second bag of chips. So, next time someone says you are putting on a bit of weight, you should go for a run... inform them that you are training for Everest.
