Where does true happiness lie? Few days back I encountered an amazing situation which drew me closer to the ever pristine universal truth. While travelling back to my destination I was stopped at the red signal. There was a little girl around 10 years of age in torn and shabby clothes begging to everyone stopping at the signal. It must be her daily routine begging around that area, not only to suffice her hunger, but her younger brother’s as well. A luxury car stopped at the signal when the poor girl decided to ask money from the front seat passenger. The car contained passengers who were heading to a party as it seemed very obvious with all the zeal and enthusiasm they exhibited in public. The poor little girl cajoled her way out to get some money from them, but to her vain; they offered nothing. Instead, she was asked many preposterous questions. She couldn’t’ mind much as she must have gotten stoic towards the incessant ridicule and disappointment she receives on a daily basis. She accepted the rejection with all grace and smile. I saw her walking back to her little brother, loving him with all the warmth and love a mother could possibly render. Not only was I surprised about the happiness she contained herself with irrespective of all the derision, but also her jovial nature to persuade another passenger to provide her some money. Everything happened in a swift. The green light signaled, and I moved far across to the other side without helping her. I still feel terrible about it. The rest of the way I was triggered with a question “Where does true happiness lie “? Does it lie in a luxury car, a fancy party or in the warmth and positivity of a poor girl who doesn’t own a roof above her head but understands every reason to smile no matter how tumultuous the tide of life gets. Aren’t we becoming poorer and parsimonious with all the illusion of riches and comfort bestowed upon us? How easily we have forgotten the basic instinct of composure, love, kindness and philanthropy. It definitely would have made more sense if no money was offered to her respectfully, but why laugh at a poor girl’s disability and seek happiness from a self proclaimed superiority. With all the observation made that particular day, I can vouch on the fact that the poor girl is extremely rich and giving, because she has found the amazing wisdom of finding happiness in herself. Her present condition and destitution has not limited her in any possible manner. She has grown into a beautiful being that withstood all the humiliation charismatically and demonstrated incredible strength to smile through every hardship. I salute the poor girl from the bottom of my heart. Wish I could take a picture of this little responsible angel. Regards, Maitreyi Raghuraman
