While I am disappointed in the Travon Martin verdict, I respect the law, the jury’s decision and due process in our Constitutional system. Unfortunately, the Martins lost their son and must overcome the heartbreaking loss: My best wishes for the healing and health of the family. Now, is the time to look forward and focus on the civil trial in which the burden of proof is not as stringent—beyond a reasonable doubt and justifiably so—as a criminal court. I hope that some compensation will be awarded in the future. Also, the “Stand Your Ground” law is the root cause of the verdict. As a culture and society, Americans must examine these laws and not allow such a tragic event to occur again. The laws should be overturned in order to prevent another senseless murder.
