While I have implemented realtime multiple physical location data - TopicsExpress

While I have implemented realtime multiple physical location data fault tolerance for all of my client data I had fallen behind on my periodic offline backups to optical disc as many of my projects now include hundreds if not thousands of gigabytes of data (I blame our video cameras that shoot raw). Interestingly, LTO-4 tapes seem like a very cost effective way for a small media operation to do offline backup. The drives are available for under $1500 or under $500 used and tapes work out to about $20/terabyte thereafter. They also offer a much lower hard fault rate compared to a single enterprise magnetic drive (we use RAID 6 everywhere for this reason) and much, much lower hard fault rate than a single consumer class drive and still for lower cost per gigabyte. While Ill still be rolling out more RAID 6 (future 10) GbE connected magnetic arrays for online file storage and backupI will likely phase out individual magnetic drives for offline file backup.
