While everybody is busting open cans of worms, who here thinks the Inquisitions were unjustifiable? I aint Catholic, so probably not the best to do this, infact Im Anti Catholic but here goes., When Rome fell the Church took the place of the State hence the Theocracy. It wasnt no magical wondrous transition of power like some Historical Revisionists would want you to envision but rather a slow and gradual rebuilding of a torn State tending to the peoples needs. Now, as the knowledge dawned upon the Church that it was in a Governing Position perhaps it should have created a separate State but that never eventuated and the Church had the God Ordained Position to defend its Citizenry just as you expect from your Government today! So when you have Heretics attacking the Church, in a Theocracy they are attacking the State too! I think too may people sling this word Inquisition around like its a dirty word and really dont understand the true nature of the Historical Inquisitions!
