While merging hay this evening saw a doe and 2 fawns. That lead to some mental math as I drove around and around: all winter there was a herd of 30 deer on the north end of our farm every day. Typically there is a buck for every 3 or 4 does. So the 30 deer was about 6 or 7 bucks and 23 or 24 does. The average doe had 2 fawns this spring, 46 to 48 fawns total. So the 30 deer herd last winter is now 76 to 78 deer. All out there eating our crops and standing on the roads waiting to wreck a car.
