While my more anti-God and anti-Christian friends are apt to affirm our country’s turn away from religion as a result of the scopes trail and its historical significance for modern American view of government and American life, most do not know the roots of the Scopes trail. The scopes trial was indeed an attempt to take a step away from biblical person-hood, in that the debate would settle that it was a right to teach in public schools that the Caucasian race was the supreme race. If Scopes would have won, that would have been allowed. But people forget that the issue of keeping creation and God as the centrality of public education was to reinforce, no some evil intent of conservative Christians, but the very words of our Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” The basis for this declaration, our framers affirmed came not from government or the power of the electorate, but as such is “endowed by their Creator.” This indicated the basis why as Americans, as people we have “certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” I prefer having an authority that indicates that all individuals are indeed equal.
